When Hate Blinds the Heart: The Story of Madyan and the Prophet They Rejected

Because this story is not ancient.
It is alive today.
🌍 The City of Wealth — But Corrupt Hearts
In the busy trade city of , markets were full. Gold exchanged hands. Caravans arrived daily.
But behind the smiles of merchants…
Scales were manipulated.
Measurements were reduced.
People were cheated quietly.
Allah sent to them their own brother:
(ʿalayhis-salām).
He was not a stranger.
He grew up among them.
They knew his character.
🕊 His Simple Message
He stood in the marketplace and said:
“O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him…”
(Surah Al-A‘rāf 7:85)
Then he addressed their real disease:
“Fulfill the measure and weight and do not deprive people of their due…”
(7:85)
Notice something powerful:
Tawḥīd (faith)
and
Honesty in business
were mentioned together.
Because when faith is corrupt, society becomes corrupt.
🔥 Their Reaction: Mockery and Hate
Instead of listening, they laughed.
The Qur’an records their arrogance:
“O Shu'ayb, does your prayer command you that we leave what our fathers worship or stop doing with our wealth what we will?”
(Surah Hūd 11:87)
Look at the mindset:
“Religion should stay in the mosque.”
“Don’t interfere in our business.”
“It’s our money — we do what we want.”
Does this sound familiar in our time?
💔 When Advice Feels Like Attack
Shuʿayb (AS) did not insult them.
He did not threaten them.
He said gently:
“I only desire reform as much as I am able. My success is only through Allah.”
(Surah Hūd 11:88)
But when hearts are filled with greed,
truth feels like an enemy.
⚡ The Warning
Shuʿayb (AS) reminded them of past nations destroyed for corruption.
Yet they responded with hate:
“If it were not for your family, we would have stoned you…”
(Surah Hūd 11:91)
They respected tribe —
but not truth.
🌩 The End of Arrogance
They continued cheating.
They continued mocking.
Then Allah’s decree came.
The Qur’an describes:
“So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their homes lifeless bodies.”
(Surah Al-A‘rāf 7:91)
And in another verse:
“The punishment of the Day of Shadow seized them…”
(Surah Ash-Shuʿarā 26:189)
Their markets became silent.
Their wealth could not save them.
🧠 The Deeper Lesson for Our Time
Today we may not adjust physical scales —
but we adjust:
Online contracts
Hidden fees
False marketing
Exploitation of workers
Corrupt systems
And when someone speaks truth, we say: “Don’t judge.” “Mind your own business.” “Religion is personal.”
But the Qur’an teaches: Faith is not personal only —
it shapes society.
🌟 A Prophetic Principle
The Prophet ** ﷺ said:
“The truthful and trustworthy merchant will be with the Prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs.”
(Tirmidhī – authentic)
Business integrity is worship.
Another hadith:
“Whoever cheats us is not from us.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)
Islam is not ritual alone.
It is moral accountability.
🌿 The Real Question
Madyan did not fall because they were poor.
They fell because they normalized injustice.
Today we must ask:
Do we compromise faith for profit?
Do we remain silent when corruption spreads?
Do we separate religion from daily life?
🏁 Final Reflection
Shuʿayb (AS) said:
“That is better for you, if you are believers.”
(7:85)
Allah did not command honesty to restrict us.
He commanded it to protect society.
Because:
When faith is corrupt,
society becomes corrupt.
But when faith is sincere,
justice returns.
