When Does Allah Leave a Person Without Guidance?
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيم
Understanding Surah Ghāfir 40:28 & 40:33
"Indeed, Allah does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar." (Surah Ghāfir 40:28)
"...And whoever Allah leaves astray – there is no guide for him." (Surah Ghāfir 40:33)
These two verses are closely connected. They teach us an important principle:
Allah never wrongs anyone. A person is not deprived of guidance without first choosing a path that distances themselves from Allah.
Allah says elsewhere:
"Allah does not wrong the people at all, but it is the people who wrong themselves." (Qur'an 10:44)
A Common Misunderstanding
Many people ask:
"If Allah guides whom He wills, why are some people left astray?"
The Qur'an explains that Allah's guidance is never random or unfair.
There are two types of guidance:
1. Guidance shown to everyone
Allah sends:
The Qur'an
Prophets and Messengers
Scholars
Signs in creation
The natural disposition (fitrah)
Opportunities to repent
Everyone receives this invitation.
2. Guidance placed into the heart (Tawfīq)
This special guidance is given to those who sincerely seek the truth.
Allah says:
"As for those who strive for Us, We will surely guide them to Our ways." (Surah Al-'Ankabūt 29:69)
Why Does Allah Leave Some People Astray?
Allah leaves a person astray after they repeatedly reject guidance, not before.
Imagine this example.
A teacher explains the lesson many times.
One student listens carefully.
Another keeps mocking, refusing, cheating, and ignoring every warning.
Eventually the teacher stops forcing him.
Likewise, Allah sends reminders again and again.
If someone repeatedly rejects them, Allah allows them to continue on the path they themselves have chosen.
According to Surah Ghāfir 40:28
The believing man says:
"Indeed Allah does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar."
Two qualities are mentioned.
1. A Transgressor (Musrif)
This refers to someone who repeatedly exceeds Allah's limits.
Examples include:
Persisting in sins without repentance.
Oppressing others.
Following desires over Allah's commands.
Rejecting clear truth out of arrogance.
Continuing wrongdoing despite repeated reminders.
This is not someone who sins and repents.
Rather, it is someone who chooses to continue.
2. A Liar (Kadhdhāb)
This includes:
Lying about Allah.
Rejecting the truth while knowing it.
Distorting religion.
Pretending falsehood is truth.
Deliberately deceiving people.
Pharaoh knew Musa (ʿalayhis-salām) brought signs from Allah.
Yet he continued lying to protect his power.
Then Allah Says (40:33)
"Whoever Allah leaves astray, there is no guide for him."
This means:
After someone stubbornly rejects the truth, ignores every reminder, becomes arrogant, persists in sin, and refuses repentance,
Allah may seal that person's heart.
At that point, no human being can guide them unless Allah opens their heart again.
Other Qualities Mentioned Throughout the Qur'an
Allah says He does not guide:
1. The Wrongdoers (Ẓālimīn)
People who oppress themselves or others.
"Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people."
2. The Disbelievers
Those who knowingly reject the truth.
3. The Corrupt (Fāsiqīn)
Those who knowingly disobey Allah and persist.
4. The Arrogant
People who refuse the truth because of pride.
Allah says:
"I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant upon the earth without right." (Surah Al-A'rāf 7:146)
5. Those Who Follow Their Desires
When desires become more important than revelation.
6. Those Who Turn Away After Knowing
The Qur'an repeatedly warns about people who know the truth but deliberately abandon it.
What Causes a Heart to Become Sealed?
The process usually looks like this:
Allah sends guidance.
The person rejects it.
Allah sends more reminders.
The person becomes arrogant.
Sins increase.
The heart becomes harder.
Repentance becomes less likely.
Allah leaves them upon the path they chose.
It is a gradual consequence, not an arbitrary decision.
How Can We Avoid This?
The Qur'an teaches us practical ways:
1. Always ask Allah for guidance
We recite every day:
"Guide us to the Straight Path." (Surah Al-Fātiḥah 1:6)
2. Repent quickly
Do not let sins become habits.
3. Accept the truth
Even when it challenges your ego.
4. Stay humble
Arrogance was the downfall of Iblīs and Pharaoh.
5. Keep good company
Righteous companions strengthen faith.
6. Read and reflect on the Qur'an daily
The Qur'an softens the heart and renews guidance.
7. Make sincere duʿā'
The Prophet ﷺ frequently
supplicated:
"O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion."
Arabic: يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ
Transliteration: Yā Muqallibal-qulūb, thabbit qalbī ʿalā dīnik.
(Authentic – Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī)
Key Reflection
The Qur'an does not teach that Allah randomly guides some and misguides others.
Rather:
Allah shows the way to everyone.
Whoever sincerely seeks Him, Allah increases them in guidance.
Whoever repeatedly rejects the truth, persists in sin, lies, and becomes arrogant may eventually be left to the path they have chosen.
As Allah says:
"And those who are guided - He increases them in guidance and grants them their righteousness." (Surah Muḥammad 47:17)
And He also says:
"When they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate." (Surah Aṣ-Ṣaff 61:5)
This verse beautifully summarizes the principle:
They chose deviation first; Allah then allowed their hearts to remain upon that choice as a just consequence.
A Simple Takeaway
Every day, we stand at one of two doors:
Choose humility, repentance, honesty, and obedience → Allah increases guidance.
Choose arrogance, persistent sin, lying, and rejection of the truth → The heart gradually loses its light.
May Allah make us among those whose hearts He continually guides, softens, and keeps firm upon the truth until we meet Him. Āmīn.
