When a Nation Lost Its Shame: The Story of Prophet Lut (AS)

Among the many powerful stories in the Qur’an is the story of the Prophet (peace be upon him). It is not just a story of punishment — it is a story of warning, patience, mercy, and the consequences of crossing moral limits.
🌿 A Prophet Sent to a Corrupt Society
Lut (AS) was sent to a people living in the cities of and its surrounding areas.
Allah says:
“And [We had sent] Lot when he said to his people, ‘Do you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds?’”
(Qur’an 7:80)
Their crime was not hidden. It was open, public, and normalized. They practiced immoral acts between men and even committed highway robbery and public indecency (Qur’an 29:29).
Lut (AS) called them gently:
“Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. So fear Allah and obey me.”
(Qur’an 26:161–163)
But instead of feeling ashamed, they mocked him.
🚫 When Sin Becomes Pride
Instead of repenting, they responded with arrogance:
“Expel them from your city! Indeed, they are people who keep themselves pure.”
(Qur’an 7:82)
Imagine that — purity became something to laugh at.
When a society reaches the point where good is seen as strange and sin is seen as normal, destruction is already near.
The Arrival of the Angels
One day, angels came to Lut (AS) in the form of handsome men. They had first visited his uncle, the Prophet (peace be upon him), giving him glad tidings and informing him that the people of Lut were to be punished (Qur’an 11:69–76).
When the angels arrived in Lut’s town, the corrupt people rushed toward his house with evil intentions.
Lut (AS) pleaded:
“O my people, these are my daughters; they are purer for you. So fear Allah and do not disgrace me concerning my guests.”
(Qur’an 11:78)
But they refused. Their hearts were sealed.
At that moment, the angels revealed their identity:
“O Lot, indeed we are messengers of your Lord; they will never reach you.”
(Qur’an 11:81)
They instructed Lut (AS) to leave the city at night with his family — except his wife, who chose to side with the corrupt people.
🌪 The Destruction
Allah describes the punishment:
“So We saved him and his family, except his wife; she was of those who remained behind. And We rained upon them a rain [of stones]. Then see how was the end of the criminals.”
(Qur’an 7:83–84)
The earth was overturned. Stones rained from the sky. The cities were destroyed completely.
What remained? A lesson for humanity.
💔 Even His Wife Did Not Believe
One of the most powerful lessons is that being close to a prophet does not guarantee salvation.
Allah says:
“Allah presents an example of those who disbelieved: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot…”
(Qur’an 66:10)
Faith is personal. No one can believe on your behalf.
🌟 The Powerful Ending
The story of Lut (AS) is not just about punishment.
It is about:
The danger of normalizing major sin
The courage to stand alone for truth
The importance of protecting moral boundaries
The reality that Allah’s justice is certain
But it is also about hope.
Because before punishment came, warnings came.
Before destruction came, mercy came.
Before accountability came, guidance came.
Allah never destroys without first sending reminders.
🧭 A Question for Us
Every time this story is repeated in the Qur’an, Allah ends it with reflection:
“Indeed in that are signs for a people who reflect.”
The question is not about Sodom.
The question is about us.
When society changes…
When sin becomes fashionable…
When purity is mocked…
Will we stand like Lut (AS)?
Or will we follow the crowd?
May Allah make us among those who protect their faith, even if they stand alone. Ameen.
