🌿 What Does Your Soul Look Like?

When we think of personality, most people rush to online tests—Myers Briggs, Big Five, and so on. But all of these are rooted in a worldview that ignores the soul.
Islam teaches us that our true personality is not measured by labels or frameworks, but by the appearance of the soul—our khuluq (inner qualities).
The Prophet ﷺ would supplicate:
“O Allah, just as You have beautified my outward appearance, beautify my inward character.”
Our inward traits—patience, honesty, forgiveness, courage, justice—are what Allah looks at. As the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allah does not look at your bodies nor your appearance, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.”
🌟 Two Lenses of Character
Every believer is seen through two lenses:
With People – Are we patient, kind, trustworthy, and fair?
With Allah – Are we sincere, consistent in prayer, resisting temptations, and striving to please Him?
Both matter, and both will be measured on the Day of Judgment.
⚖️ Balance Between Extremes
Imam al-Ghazali رحمه الله explains that every quality lies between two extremes:
Anger – Too much becomes rage, too little becomes cowardice.
Mercy – Too much becomes weakness, too little becomes harshness.
Patience, courage, humility—all must find the balanced middle.
The Prophet ﷺ embodied this balance perfectly. He showed mercy where it was needed, and firm anger only when Allah’s commands were violated.
🔑 Four Core Traits to Develop
Al-Ghazali identifies four essential inward traits that shape all others:
Self-control – mastering desires.
Courage – drive, ambition, resilience.
Justice (situational judgment) – knowing what to do and when.
Resisting temptation – saying “no” to what displeases Allah.
Focus on these four, and other qualities will fall into place.
🧭 Self-Evaluation: The First Step
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Evaluate yourselves before you are evaluated.”
Just as a car needs regular servicing, our souls need regular self-assessment. Don’t wait until the Day of Judgment to discover spiritual bankruptcy. Start now—identify your strengths and weaknesses, and work on refining them.
