When Do We Recite the Ibrahimiyyah Salawat?

1. The Basic Tashahhud (First Tashahhud)

The Prophet ﷺ taught the companions to recite the following during Tashahhud.

Arabic

التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَىٰ عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

Transliteration

At-taḥiyyātu lillāhi waṣ-ṣalawātu waṭ-ṭayyibāt.
As-salāmu ʿalayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh.
As-salāmu ʿalaynā wa ʿalā ʿibādillāhiṣ-ṣāliḥīn.
Ashhadu an lā ilāha illa-llāh wa ashhadu anna Muḥammadan ʿabduhu wa rasūluh.

Meaning

“All greetings, prayers and pure words belong to Allah.
Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah.
I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.”

This is the core Tashahhud.

2. The Salawat Ibrahimiyyah (Added in the Final Tashahhud)

In the last sitting, the Prophet ﷺ taught us to send blessings upon him.

Arabic

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ
إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ
إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

Transliteration

Allahumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammad
wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad
kamā ṣallayta ʿalā Ibrāhīm
wa ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm
innaka ḥamīdun majīd.

Allahumma bārik ʿalā Muḥammad
wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad
kamā bārakta ʿalā Ibrāhīm
wa ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm
innaka ḥamīdun majīd.

3. When Do We Recite Each One?

A. Prayers with Two Rakʿah

Examples:

• Fajr

• Sunnah prayers

• Tahajjud

• Duha

• Tahiyyatul Masjid

What to Recite

Since there is only one sitting, it is the final Tashahhud.

Therefore you recite:

1️⃣ Tashahhud
2️⃣ Salawat Ibrahimiyyah
3️⃣ Dua before Salam
4️⃣ Salam

So yes — in Fajr and Sunnah prayers you recite the Salawat Ibrahimiyyah.

B. Prayers with Three or Four Rakʿah

Examples:

• Dhuhr

• Asr

• Maghrib

• Isha

First Sitting (First Tashahhud)

Recite only:

✔ Tashahhud

Then stand for the next rakʿah.

Evidence

Abdullah ibn Masʿud reported:

“The Prophet ﷺ used to sit after two rakʿahs and recite the Tashahhud.”

وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ
وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ
