The Test of Magic

A Warning Against Seeking Power Beyond Allah

وَاتَّبَعُوا مَا تَتْلُو الشَّيَاطِينُ عَلَىٰ مُلْكِ سُلَيْمَانَ ۖ وَمَا كَفَرَ سُلَيْمَانُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ الشَّيَاطِينَ كَفَرُوا يُعَلِّمُونَ النَّاسَ السِّحْرَ وَمَا أُنزِلَ عَلَى الْمَلَكَيْنِ بِبَابِلَ هَارُوتَ وَمَارُوتَ ۚ وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ حَتَّىٰ يَقُولَا إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ فِتْنَةٌ فَلَا تَكْفُرْ ۖ فَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مِنْهُمَا مَا يُفَرِّقُونَ بِهِ بَيْنَ الْمَرْءِ وَزَوْجِهِ ۚ وَمَا هُم بِضَارِّينَ بِهِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ۚ وَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مَا يَضُرُّهُمْ وَلَا يَنفَعُهُمْ ۚ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمُوا لَمَنِ اشْتَرَاهُ مَا لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ مِنْ خَلَاقٍ ۚ وَلَبِئْسَ مَا شَرَوْا بِهِ أَنفُسَهُمْ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ۝۱٠۲

And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, "We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]." And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.

(Al Quran 2:102)

📖 Context of the Verse (Al-Baqarah 2:102):

This verse was revealed to clarify a major misunderstanding among the Children of Israel (Bani Isra’il). During the time of Prophet Sulaiman (Solomon) عليه السلام, some people falsely accused him of practicing magic to control jinn and rule his kingdom. In truth, Sulaiman was a Prophet of Allah, not a magician — his power came only by Allah’s permission.

After his death, devils spread lies and taught people sorcery, claiming it was part of Sulaiman’s knowledge. To test the people, Allah sent two angels — Harut and Marut — in Babylon. They did not teach magic for benefit, but rather as a trial (fitnah), always warning:

“We are a test, so do not disbelieve.”

Yet people ignored the warning and learned magic — especially the kind that causes division between husband and wife — one of Shayṭān’s favorite evils.

🪄 Key Lessons & Interpretation:

1. Sulaiman (عليه السلام) was innocent of disbelief or magic.
   ➤ Magic (siḥr) is kufr (disbelief) when someone relies on it instead of Allah.

2. Magic was a test from Allah.
   ➤ The angels warned clearly — whoever learns it rejects Allah’s guidance.

3. Magic cannot harm except by Allah’s permission.
   ➤ No spell, evil eye, or sorcery has independent power; everything happens only by Allah’s will.

4. People learned what harms, not what benefits.
   ➤ Magic brings no real benefit — it destroys faith, relationships, and peace.

5. Trading faith for worldly gains is a terrible loss.
   ➤ Those who seek control or wealth through magic “sold their souls” for something worthless in the Hereafter.

🌙 Simplified Understanding:

Allah reminds us that seeking hidden power through magic or the unseen is a form of disbelief. True power lies only with Allah. Any attempt to manipulate others through siḥr leads to spiritual destruction. Believers should seek protection through du‘ā, dhikr, and trust in Allah, not through forbidden means.

“Nothing can harm you unless Allah wills. So rely upon Him alone, and protect your heart from the whispers of Shayṭān.”
