🌿 The Reality of the Nafs: Friend or Foe?
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
What is the Nafs?
The nafs is our inner self — the source of desires, pride, jealousy, and temptations.
It can either pull us towards evil or lift us towards Allah when purified.
Origin of the Nafs
Allah created the nafs before humans were born.
Every soul testified: “Am I not your Lord?” — and all answered: “Yes.”
This natural inclination (fitrah) makes us seek purpose and ask: Who created me? Why am I here?
The Struggle Within
The nafs is a double-edged sword: it can make us like angels when disciplined, or worse than beasts when ignored.
On the Day of Judgment, our nafs will be questioned. Our body will testify against it if it lied.
How to Tame the Nafs
✔️ Discipline it with prayer, Qur’an, and remembrance.
✔️ Make conscious decisions to do good, even in small steps.
✔️ Confide in Allah — share your secrets, fears, and hopes with Him.
✔️ Balance life: don’t indulge the nafs, but don’t destroy it either.
✔️ Guard your heart — sincerity turns every action into worship.
The Modern Trap
Social media, materialism, ego-driven “self-love” — these feed the nafs with illusions of happiness.
True joy lies in remembrance of Allah, sincere worship, and service to others.
