The Morning of Uhud: When Faith Was Tested and Hearts Were Revealed
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem,
This is not just the story of a battle.
It is the story of obedience, love, pain, courage, and a lesson that still speaks to us today.
The events took place near , just outside , in the third year after Hijrah.
1️⃣ The Morning Departure – A Leader Preparing His People
Allah says:
“And [remember] when you left your family in the morning to post the believers at their stations for battle – and Allah is Hearing and Knowing.”
(Āl ‘Imrān 3:121)
Before sunrise, the Prophet ﷺ left his home. He did not leave for power. He did not leave for revenge. He left to defend Madinah.
The Quraysh of Makkah had come with nearly 3,000 men to avenge their defeat at Badr.
The Prophet ﷺ consulted his companions. Some senior companions preferred to defend inside Madinah. Many younger companions — who had missed Badr — wanted to meet the enemy outside.
The Prophet ﷺ accepted the majority opinion.
Lesson: Leadership in Islam is consultation (shūrā), even if the leader receives revelation.
2️⃣ The Archers’ Hill – A Clear Command
When they reached Uhud, the Prophet ﷺ placed 50 archers on a small hill (later known as Jabal ar-Rumah).
He gave them a clear, repeated command:
“If you see us victorious, do not leave your place.
If you see us defeated, do not leave your place.”
(Authentic – reported in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī)
This was not a suggestion. It was a direct order.
Why?
Because that hill protected the Muslim army from being attacked from behind.
3️⃣ The First Victory
The battle began.
The Muslims fought bravely. Great warriors like Ḥamzah ibn ‘Abd al-Muṭṭalib (رضي الله عنه) moved through the battlefield with strength and courage.
The Quraysh lines began to collapse.
They started retreating.
The archers on the hill saw the enemy fleeing and the Muslims collecting spoils of war.
Some of them said: “The battle is over! Let us go and collect our share.”
Their leader reminded them: “Did you forget the Prophet’s command?”
But most of them descended from the hill.
Only a few remained.
And that moment changed everything.
4️⃣ The Turning Point
Khalid ibn al-Walid — who was not yet Muslim — was leading the cavalry of Quraysh.
He noticed the hill was nearly empty.
He seized the opportunity.
His cavalry rode around the mountain and attacked the Muslims from behind.
Suddenly, confusion spread.
The Muslims were caught between two forces.
In that chaos, rumors spread: “Muhammad has been killed!”
Some companions froze. Some threw down their weapons. Some continued fighting.
Allah revealed about this moment:
“Muhammad is no more than a messenger. Messengers have passed before him. If he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels?”
(Āl ‘Imrān 3:144)
This verse later strengthened the Ummah again at the real death of the Prophet ﷺ.
5️⃣ The Prophet ﷺ Is Wounded
The Prophet ﷺ was surrounded.
He was injured. His helmet was broken. His tooth was injured. Blood flowed from his noble face.
Fāṭimah (رضي الله عنها) later washed the blood from his face.
Despite this, he raised his hands and said:
“O Allah, forgive my people, for they do not know.”
(Authentic meaning reported in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī & Muslim)
Not anger.
Not revenge.
Mercy.
6️⃣ The Martyrdom of Ḥamzah (رضي الله عنه)
Ḥamzah, the Lion of Allah, was martyred.
His death was painful for the Prophet ﷺ.
He stood over his uncle’s body with tears in his eyes.
Yet he did not allow revenge to control him.
7️⃣ Why Did This Happen?
Allah explains clearly in the Qur’an:
“And Allah certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them by His permission — until when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love…”
(Āl ‘Imrān 3:152)
Victory was near.
But disobedience opened a door.
Uhud teaches us:
Victory is not just about numbers.
It is about obedience.
It is about discipline.
It is about sincerity.
8️⃣ Was Uhud a Defeat?
Outwardly, yes — 70 companions were martyred.
But spiritually?
It was purification.
Allah says:
“…So that Allah may test what is in your hearts and purify what is within your breasts.”
(Āl ‘Imrān 3:154)
Uhud exposed:
Hypocrites who left before battle.
Weak hearts.
True believers who stood firm.
It separated sincerity from pride.
9️⃣ The Deeper Lesson for Us
Uhud is not just history.
It is our daily life.
When we:
Compromise on obedience for quick gain,
Think “It’s already successful,”
Relax when Allah commands discipline,
We risk losing unseen protection.
Uhud teaches entrepreneurs, leaders, families, students:
Small disobedience can create big consequences.
But sincere repentance brings elevation.
10️⃣ The Aftermath – Strength, Not Collapse
The next day, despite injuries, the Prophet ﷺ called the companions again to show strength (Battle of Ḥamrā’ al-Asad).
Only those who had fought at Uhud were allowed to go.
The message was clear:
“We are not broken.”
Allah revealed:
“Those who responded to Allah and the Messenger after injury had struck them — for those who did good and feared Allah is a great reward.”
(Āl ‘Imrān 3:172)

At Uhud we learn:
Obedience brings protection.
Leadership requires consultation.
Discipline matters even after success.
Mercy is higher than revenge.
Loss does not mean Allah has abandoned you.
Tests reveal hearts.
Mount Uhud still stands in Madinah.
And the Prophet ﷺ once said:
“Uhud is a mountain that loves us and we love it.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī)
It is not just a mountain.
It is a witness.
May Allah make us people of obedience before victory, patience during tests, and gratitude after success.

cleanse our hearts from pride,
remove from us love of dunya that blinds us.
O Allah, grant us obedience before victory,
gratitude after success,
and repentance after mistakes.
O Allah, make us among those who respond to You and Your Messenger even after hardship,
and write for us the reward of the truthful.
O Allah, protect our deeds from being wasted,
protect our efforts from arrogance,
protect our leadership from ego,
and protect our Ummah from division.
O Allah, let us meet You with hearts that stood firm in times of trial.
