The Du‘a of Noble Generosity

A Supplication of Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubadah رضي الله عنه

📖 Arabic Text

اللَّهُمَّ هَبْ لِي حَمْدًا، وَهَبْ لِي مَجْدًا،
لَا مَجْدَ إِلَّا بِفِعَالٍ، وَلَا فِعَالَ إِلَّا بِمَالٍ،
اللَّهُمَّ لَا يُصْلِحُنِي الْقَلِيلُ، وَلَا أَصْلُحُ عَلَيْهِ،
اللَّهُمَّ أَغْنِنِي مِنْ فَضْلِكَ حَتَّى أَكُونَ دَائِمًا غَنِيًّا، مُسْتَغْنِيًا، مُكْفِيًّا، مُنْفِقًا

🌍 English Translation

“O Allah, grant me praise and honor.
There is no true honor except through righteous deeds,
and righteous deeds often require wealth.

O Allah, little does not suit me,
and I am not suited for living with little.

O Allah, enrich me through Your bounty,
so that I may remain independent, self-sufficient, content, and generous in spending.”

🌟 The Story Behind This Du‘a

Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubadah رضي الله عنه was among the most generous companions in Madinah.

He used to feed people regularly, support the poor, host guests, and help the Muslims financially. Historical narrations mention that food from his house would often reach Rasulullah ﷺ and the people of Suffah.

Because of his great generosity, he would ask Allah for wealth — not for luxury or pride — but so he could continue serving people and doing righteous deeds.

Scholars mention that his understanding was:

Wealth in the hands of a righteous servant can become a means of charity, honor, helping the needy, supporting Islam, and caring for people.

This is why he made this beautiful du‘a.

🌿 Important Reflection

This du‘a does NOT mean:

• loving dunya excessively,

• showing arrogance,

• or looking down on poor people.

Islam teaches us:

• poverty is not shameful,

• and wealth is not automatically a sign of righteousness.

Rather, the du‘a means:

“O Allah, give me enough wealth so I can serve You better, help people, stay independent from creation, and spend in goodness.”

⏰ Best Times to Recite

You may recite this du‘a:

• after Fajr,

• after Tahajjud,

• after salah,

• before starting business/work,

• when facing financial difficulty,

• when asking Allah for halal rizq,

• or anytime making sincere du‘a.

• Wealth should be used for good deeds.

• A believer should ask Allah directly for halal rizq.
