Surah Al-Baqarah (2:265)
“And the example of those who spend their wealth seeking the pleasure of Allah and to strengthen their souls is like a garden on high ground which is struck by heavy rain and yields its fruit double; and if it is not struck by heavy rain, then a drizzle suffices. And Allah is Seeing of what you do.”
🧭 1. Context of the Verse
This verse comes in a series of verses in Surah Al-Baqarah that discuss:
Spending in the way of Allah (charity, sadaqah)
The importance of sincerity
Warning against showing off (riya’) or hurting others after giving
Just before this verse (2:264), Allah warns about charity that is ruined by reminders and arrogance.
Then in 2:265, Allah gives a beautiful contrast — the example of sincere charity.

🌧️ Heavy Rain (وَابِلٌ)
When strong rain falls:
The garden produces double fruit
It flourishes abundantly
👉 Meaning: When sincerity meets opportunity, reward multiplies greatly.
🌦️ Even a Light Drizzle (طَلٌّ)
Even if heavy rain doesn’t come:
A light drizzle is enough for it to grow.
👉 Meaning: Even small sincere charity is rewarded. You don’t need to be rich. You don’t need a large amount.
Sincerity makes small deeds grow big.
❤️ 3. Key Interpretations from Scholars
Scholars explain:
“Seeking the pleasure of Allah” → Pure intention (Ikhlas)
“Strengthening themselves” → Giving builds faith and certainty in the heart
The garden represents a believer whose heart is firm in faith
Rain represents Allah’s blessing and acceptance
Ibn Kathir mentions that this is the example of charity that is given sincerely and consistently, not for praise.
