A concise, step‑by‑step handbook with Arabic text, transliteration, and English translation, based on authentic, widely‑taught practice. May Allah accept your ‘Umrah.
Note: Follow on‑site authorities and your group leader. Women recite softly; men recite aloud where mentioned. Avoid pushing/crowding; assist others.

Iḥrām at Mīqāt → Niyyah for ‘Umrah → Talbiyah.
Enter Masjid al‑Ḥarām → Du‘ā’ → Ṭawāf (7 rounds).
Pray 2 Rak‘ahs at Maqām Ibrāhīm → Drink Zamzam.
Sa‘ī between Ṣafā & Marwah (7 laps, start at Ṣafā, end at Marwah).

Preparation Before Iḥrām
Bathe/ghusl, trim nails, remove pubic/underarm hair if needed.
Men may apply perfume to the body (not the iḥrām cloth) before iḥrām.
Wear simple sandals/footwear that leave ankles uncovered (for men).
1) Entering Iḥrām at the Mīqāt
Make intention for ‘Umrah in your heart (and you may say):
Arabic: لَبَّيْكَ عُمْرَةً
Transliteration: Labbayka ‘umratan.
Meaning: “Here I am (O Allah) for ‘Umrah.”
Then begin reciting the Talbiyah (frequently until ṭawāf begins):
Arabic:
لَبَّيْكَ اللّٰهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ
لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ
إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ
لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ
Transliteration: Labbayk Allāhumma labbayk. Labbayk lā sharīka laka labbayk. Inna al‑ḥamda wan‑ni‘mata laka wal‑mulk. Lā sharīka lak.
Translation: “Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am; You have no partner, here I am. Truly, all praise, blessing and sovereignty are Yours. You have no partner.”
Men: recite aloud. Women: recite softly.
Mīqāt quick reference
Dhūl‑Ḥulayfah (Ābyār ‘Alī) – from Madīnah direction.
Qarn al‑Manāzil (as‑Sail) – from Najd/east (often overflown by flights from SE Asia).
Yalamlam (as‑Sa‘diyyah) – from Yemen/south‑east/sea.
Juhfah (Rābigh) – from Levant/Egypt/NW (many flights cross its corridor).
Dhāt ‘Irq – from Iraq/north‑east.
Air travel: Wear iḥrām before crossing the mīqāt; airlines usually announce. If unsure, enter iḥrām earlier, not later.
2) Entering Masjid al‑Ḥarām
Enter with right foot and say:
Arabic: اللّٰهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ
Transliteration: Allāhumma iftaḥ lī abwāba raḥmatik.
Translation: “O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy.”When you first see the Ka‘bah: glorify Allah (e.g., Allāhu akbar, Subḥānallāh) and make personal du‘ā’. There is no fixed prophetic du‘ā’ at this moment.
3) Ṭawāf al‑‘Umrah (7 rounds)
Where to begin: At the Black Stone (al‑Ḥajar al‑Aswad) line. Face the Ka‘bah, raise your right hand and say:
Arabic: بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ، اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ
Transliteration: Bismi‑llāh, Allāhu akbar.
Meaning: “In the name of Allah; Allah is the Greatest.”
If possible without harm, touch/kiss the Stone. Otherwise, gesture once from afar.
Men:
Do iḍṭibā‘ (uncover right shoulder) during the whole ṭawāf; cover it again after ṭawāf.
Do raml (brisk walk) in the first three circuits if space allows.
Dhikr/du‘ā’ during ṭawāf: there is no single fixed du‘ā’; recite Qur’ān, tasbīḥ, ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ, and personal supplications.
Between the Yemeni Corner (Rukn al‑Yamānī) and the Black Stone recite this Qur’ānic du‘ā’:
Arabic: رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Transliteration: Rabbana ātinā fī d‑dunyā ḥasanah wa fī l‑ākhirati ḥasanah wa qinā ‘adhāba n‑nār.
Translation: “Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter and protect us from the Fire.” (2:201)
Complete 7 rounds, keeping the Ka‘bah on your left, and count each time you reach the Black Stone line. Finishing 7th round ends at the Black Stone line.
4) Two Rak‘ahs & Zamzam
Cover the right shoulder again. Pray 2 rak‘ahs behind Maqām Ibrāhīm if possible (or anywhere in the masjid).
Recommended recitations after Sūrat al‑Fātiḥah: Qul yā ayyuhal kāfirūn (rak‘ah 1) and Qul huwa‑llāhu aḥad (rak‘ah 2).
Proceed to Zamzam. Drink facing the Ka‘bah, saying Bismi‑llāh; make du‘ā’. (No fixed wording is obligatory.)
5) Sa‘ī between Ṣafā & Marwah (7 laps)
Go to Ṣafā. Facing the Ka‘bah, recite the verse:
Arabic: إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللّٰهِ
Transliteration: Inna ṣ‑Ṣafā wal‑Marwata min sha‘ā’iri‑llāh. (2:158, part)
Then say:
Arabic: أَبْدَأُ بِمَا بَدَأَ اللّٰهُ بِهِ
Transliteration: Abda’u bimā bada’a‑llāhu bih.
Meaning: “I begin with what Allah began (Ṣafā).”Make dhikr and du‘ā’. From the Sunnah to proclaim (repeat this 3 times, with personal du‘ā’ between each):
Arabic:
اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ.
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ، أَنْجَزَ وَعْدَهُ، وَنَصَرَ عَبْدَهُ، وَهَزَمَ الأَحْزَابَ وَحْدَهُ.Transliteration:
Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar. Lā ilāha illa‑llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu‑l‑mulku wa lahu‑l‑ḥamd, wa huwa ‘alā kulli shay’in qadīr. Lā ilāha illa‑llāhu waḥdah, anjaza wa‘dah, wa naṣara ‘abdah, wa hazama‑l‑aḥzāba waḥdah.
Meaning: “Allah is the Greatest (×3). None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and praise, and He is over all things Powerful. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone; He fulfilled His promise, supported His servant, and defeated the confederates alone.”Walk towards Marwah.
Men: jog between the green markers; women do not run.At Marwah, face the Ka‘bah and repeat the dhikr/du‘ā’ above.
This is 1 lap. Continue back to Ṣafā (lap 2), and so on, until 7 laps, ending at Marwah.
There is no fixed du‘ā’ for the rest of the Sa‘ī; recite Qur’ān, dhikr, ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ, and personal prayers.
6) Taḥallul (Exit Iḥrām) — ‘Umrah Completed
Men: Shave the head (ḥalq) is best; trimming (taqṣīr) is acceptable (cut all around the head).
Women: Trim a fingertip length from the ends of hair.
After taḥallul, all iḥrām restrictions end. Say Alḥamdulillāh, make du‘ā’.
The Prophet’s ﷺ Way in ‘Umrah (Summary)
He ﷺ would assume iḥrām at the mīqāt (e.g., Dhūl‑Ḥulayfah when traveling from Madīnah), reciting the Talbiyah aloud.
Upon entering Makkah, he performed ṭawāf, prayed two rak‘ahs at Maqām Ibrāhīm, drank Zamzam, then performed Sa‘ī between Ṣafā and Marwah, and shaved his blessed head.
His ‘Umrah were in Dhū al‑Qa‘dah (the month) except the one linked with his Ḥajj. This shows permissibility and virtue of ‘Umrah in that month.
For a pilgrim performing ‘Umrat al‑Tamattu‘ today, follow the steps above.
Useful Reminders & Common Mistakes
Keep wudu’ for ṭawāf if possible. If it breaks, renew and continue from the current round (not from the start).
Do not face or turn your back to the Ka‘bah when relieving yourself; maintain etiquette.
Avoid dedicated, long “booklet du‘ās” for each round; the Sunnah is open du‘ā’ except the known supplications mentioned.
Respect prayer times; stop ṭawāf/Sa‘ī for farḍ prayers, then continue afterwards.
Be gentle around the Black Stone; harming a Muslim is forbidden. Gesturing from afar suffices.

Talbiyah
