🌤️ Masjid al-Ghamāmah: Where the Prophet ﷺ Prayed for Rain in Madinah
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
🕌 Masjid al-Ghamāmah (Mosque of the Cloud) – Madinah
Located just southwest of , this historic mosque stands in an open plaza area and is one of the authentic prayer locations connected to the Prophet ﷺ.
📍 Location & Identification
📌 Name: Masjid al-Ghamāmah (مسجد الغمامة)
📌 City: Madinah al-Munawwarah
📌 Distance: Approximately 300 meters southwest of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi
📌 Status: Authentic historical site connected to the Seerah
📖 Why Is It Called “Al-Ghamāmah”?
The word “Ghamāmah” means cloud.
It is reported in historical sources that when the Prophet ﷺ came to this open area to perform Ṣalāt al-Istisqā’ (the prayer for rain), a cloud appeared and shaded him, and rain later fell upon Madinah.
Because of this event, the place became known as Masjid al-Ghamāmah — the Mosque of the Cloud.
🕌 What Happened Here?
1️⃣ Prayer for Rain (Ṣalāt al-Istisqā’)
The Prophet ﷺ used to go to an open area outside the main mosque to perform the rain prayer.
Authentic hadith mention:
The Prophet ﷺ went out to the musallā (prayer ground) and prayed for rain.
— (Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)
Many historians identify this location as that musallā.
2️⃣ ‘Eid Prayer Location
It is also widely reported in Seerah and historical works that the Prophet ﷺ would perform the ‘Eid prayer in this open area outside the city.
Ibn al-Qayyim and other scholars mention that the Prophet ﷺ used to go out to the musallā for Eid prayer rather than pray it inside the mosque.
This strengthens the significance of this location as the early prayer ground of Madinah.
🏛️ Was This Structure Built During the Prophet’s Time?
No.
During the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ, this was an open prayer ground, not a built mosque.
The current structure was built later during the Ottoman period and renovated in modern times.
So:
✅ The location is authentic and connected to the Seerah
❌ The building itself is not from the time of the Prophet ﷺ
🌿 Is It Part of the Seerah?
Yes — authentically connected through:
Ṣalāt al-Istisqā’ (Rain Prayer)
‘Eid prayers of the Prophet ﷺ
Early Madinan communal worship
This is not a fabricated or legendary site. It is historically documented as the musallā of Madinah.
✨ Reflection: Lessons from Masjid al-Ghamāmah
1️⃣ When there was drought, the Prophet ﷺ did not panic — he turned to Allah.
2️⃣ The community gathered together in humility.
3️⃣ Rain came not from strategy — but from du‘ā’.
This place reminds us:
Solutions begin with sujūd.
Relief begins with tawakkul.
