Surah Al-'Ādiyāt is the 100th chapter of the Holy Qur'an. It contains 11 verses and was revealed in Makkah.

Verse 1

Arabic

وَالْعَادِيَاتِ ضَبْحًا


Transliteration

Wal-'ādiyāti ḍabḥā


English Translation

"By the racers, panting."
(Qur'an 100:1)


Simple Understanding

Allah begins this surah by taking an oath by powerful horses running at full speed. They become tired and breathe heavily, yet they continue without stopping. This reminds us of determination, loyalty and striving with dedication.


Word-by-Word Meaning

  • وَ (Wa) — By

  • الْعَادِيَاتِ (Al-'Ādiyāt) — The fast-running horses

  • ضَبْحًا (Ḍabḥā) — Panting heavily


Reflection

Am I putting the same effort into obeying Allah as these horses put into serving their rider?

Verse 2


بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ


Verse 2

Arabic

فَالْمُورِيَاتِ قَدْحًا


Transliteration:

Fal-mūriyāti qadḥā


English Translation

"And the producers of sparks when striking."
(Qur'an 100:2)


Simple Understanding

As the horses race at full speed, their hooves strike the rocky ground, producing bright sparks. Allah continues His oath by describing their strength, determination and unwavering effort. This verse teaches us to remain steadfast and continue striving in obedience to Allah, even when the journey is difficult.


Word-by-Word Meaning

  • فَ (Fa) — Then / And

  • الْمُورِيَاتِ (Al-Mūriyāt) — The ones producing sparks

  • قَدْحًا (Qadḥā) — By striking (their hooves against the ground)


Reflection

Do I continue striving for Allah even when the path becomes difficult, or do I give up easily?
