Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem,

According to authentic hadiths, if someone passes in front of a person performing salah (prayer) in a masjid, it is considered a significant offense.

Narrated Busr bin Sa`id:

that Zaid bin Khalid sent him to Abi Juhaim to ask him what he had heard from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) about a person passing in front of another person who was praying. Abu Juhaim replied, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'If the person who passes in front of another person in prayer knew the magnitude of his sin he would prefer to wait for 40 (days, months or years) rather than to pass in front of him." Abu An-Nadr said, "I do not remember exactly whether he said 40 days, months or years."

Another hadith states:

"When one of you is performing prayer, he should not let anyone pass in front of him. If someone tries to pass, he should stop him. If he refuses, he should fight him, for he is a devil." (Sahih Muslim)

However, it's essential to note that this applies to people who intentionally try to pass in front of someone performing prayer. If someone unintentionally passes by, it's not considered a significant offense.

To avoid this situation, here are some suggestions:

1. Choose a suitable location: When performing prayer in a masjid, try to position yourself in a way that minimizes the likelihood of someone passing in front of you. You can pray near a wall or a pillar to reduce the chance of someone walking by.

2. Use a prayer barrier (Sutrah): A sutrah is an object placed in front of a person performing prayer to prevent others from passing by. It can be a stick, a bag, or any other object that serves as a barrier.

3. Inform others: If you're about to start your prayer, you can politely inform those around you to avoid walking in front of you.

4. Be mindful of your surroundings: When performing prayer, be aware of your surroundings and try to position yourself in a way that allows others to pass by without disturbing your prayer.

5. Avoid praying in high-traffic areas: If possible, try to avoid praying in areas with high foot traffic, such as near entrances or in the middle of the masjid.

May Allah guide us to perform our prayers with sincerity and respect for others. Ameen.
