📖 How to Start and End Qur’an Reading According to the Sunnah
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
The Prophet ﷺ did not make long specific rituals before reading Qur’an — but he followed clear, simple Sunnah principles.
1️⃣ Preparation Before Reading Qur’an
✅ 1. Be in a State of Purity (Wudū’)
While it is permissible to recite Qur’an without wuḍū’ (from memory), touching the muṣḥaf requires purity.
Allah says:
“None touch it except the purified.”
📖 Surah Al-Wāqiʿah 56:79
The majority of scholars understood this as referring to ritual purity when handling the muṣḥaf.
This shows respect and preparation.
✅ 2. Sit Calmly & Face Qiblah (Recommended, Not Obligatory)
The Prophet ﷺ loved facing the Qiblah in acts of worship
(Muslim 771)
Though not obligat
ory for recitation, it is good adab (manners).
✅ 3. Make Sincere Intention
Renew intention in the heart:
“O Allah, I read Your Book seeking guidance and reward.”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Actions are by intentions.”
📚 Bukhārī 1Sahih Muslim 1907a
🤲 2️⃣ What to Say Before Starting Qur’an
There are TWO authentic things:
1️⃣ Seek Refuge (Obligatory Sunnah Command)
Allah says:
“When you recite the Qur’an, seek refuge in Allah from Shayṭān.”
📖 Surah An-Naḥl 16:98

So say:
Arabic:
أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ
Transliteration:
Aʿūdhu billāhi min ash-shayṭān ir-rajīm
Meaning:
“I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shayṭān.”
This is commanded in the Qur’an.
2️⃣ Say Bismillah (Except Before Surah Tawbah)
The Prophet ﷺ would begin recitation with:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
This was the practice when beginning a surah
(Bukhārī 743)
❓ Is There a Specific Duʿā’ Before Reading?
There is no authentic hadith where the Prophet ﷺ recited a fixed long duʿā’ before starting Qur’an reading.
However, a general authentic duʿā’ for knowledge is beautiful to say:
🤲 Duʿā’ for Knowledge
Arabic:
اللَّهُمَّ انْفَعْنِي بِمَا عَلَّمْتَنِي وَعَلِّمْنِي مَا يَنْفَعُنِي وَزِدْنِي عِلْمًا
Transliteration:
Allāhumma infaʿnī bimā ʿallamtanī, wa ʿallimnī mā yanfaʿunī, wa zidnī ʿilman.
Meaning:
“O Allah, benefit me with what You have taught me, teach me what benefits me, and increase me in knowledge.”

📖 3️⃣ During Recitation — Sunnah Actions
✅ Reflect (Tadabbur)
Allah says:
“Do they not reflect upon the Qur’an?”
📖 Surah An-Nisā’ 4:82

The Prophet ﷺ would pause at verses of mercy and ask Allah for mercy.
At verses of punishment, he would seek protection.
📚 Muslim 772
This is powerful Sunnah.
🌿 4️⃣ After Finishing Your Session
There is no authentic fixed duʿā’ that the Prophet ﷺ recited immediately after completing a reading session.
However:
✅ Say Ṣadaqallāhu al-ʿAẓīm?
There is no authentic hadith that the Prophet ﷺ used to say this after recitation regularly.
It is not obligatory Sunnah.
✅ Make Personal Duʿā’
After reading Qur’an, your heart is soft.
Make duʿā’ sincerely.
You can say:
🤲 Duʿā’ from the Qur’an:
رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا
“My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”
📖 Surah Ṭā-Hā 20:114

Or ask:
“O Allah, make the Qur’an the light of my heart.”
There is a longer authentic duʿā’ in Musnad Ahmad (Sahih) where the Prophet ﷺ said:
“O Allah, make the Qur’an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest…”
