🌿 How to Send Salām and Ṣalāh Upon the Prophet ﷺ — The Authentic Way
Bismillāh ar-Raḥmān ar-Raḥīm
In Islam, loving the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is part of faith. But true love is not only emotion — it is following what he taught.
Many Muslims send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ daily. But what is the correct way? What is the difference between salām and ṣalāh? And what did the Prophet ﷺ himself teach?
Let us return to authentic sources.
📖 The Question of the Companions
The Companions once asked:
“O Messenger of Allah, we know how to send salām upon you. How should we send ṣalāh upon you?”
This is recorded in:
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (6357)
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (406)
They already knew how to say:
As-salāmu ‘alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh
“Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and blessings.”
But they wanted to know the exact wording for sending ṣalāh (blessings). They did not invent words. They asked.
And the Prophet ﷺ taught them.
🌟 What Is the Meaning of Ṣalāh Upon the Prophet ﷺ?
The word ṣalāh (صلاة) here does not mean the five daily prayers.
Its meaning depends on who performs it:
When Allah sends ṣalāh → It means praise, honor, elevation of rank.
When angels send ṣalāh → It means they ask Allah to honor him.
When believers send ṣalāh → We are asking Allah to bless and elevate him.
So when we say:
Allāhumma ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammad
We are saying:
“O Allah, honor Muhammad, raise his rank, praise him among the angels, and increase him in status.”
It is du‘ā to Allah — not worship of the Prophet ﷺ.
📖 The Qur’anic Command
Allah says:
Surah Al-Aḥzāb (33:56)
“Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings and peace upon him abundantly.”
Sending ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ is not optional love — it is a divine command.
✅ The Authentic Formula (Ṣalāt Ibrāhīmiyyah)
The Prophet ﷺ taught this wording:

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ
إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ
اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ
إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ
Transliteration
Allāhumma ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammad wa ‘alā āli Muḥammad
kamā ṣallayta ‘alā Ibrāhīm wa ‘alā āli Ibrāhīm
innaka Ḥamīdun Majīd
Allāhumma bārik ‘alā Muḥammad wa ‘alā āli Muḥammad
kamā bārakta ‘alā Ibrāhīm wa ‘alā āli Ibrāhīm
innaka Ḥamīdun Majīd
Meaning
“O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.
O Allah, send Your grace upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent grace upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.”
This is the most authentic and complete form. We recite it in every prayer during tashahhud.
🌿 Short Authentic Forms
It is also valid to say:
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ
Allāhumma ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammad
Or simply:
Ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam
Both are authentic and sufficient.
🤲 Difference Between Salām and Ṣalāh
Term Meaning Salām Asking Allah to grant peace and safety Ṣalāh Asking Allah to raise rank and honor
So when we say:
Ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam
We are combining both blessings and peace.
🎁 The Reward of Sending Ṣalāh
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah sends ten blessings upon him.”
— Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (408)
Every time you send one ṣalāh, Allah blesses you ten times.
This is a mercy for us.
🌺 What About Poetic Salawat?
Many cultures have beautiful poetic praises of the Prophet ﷺ. As long as the meanings are correct and free from exaggeration, they are expressions of love.
However, the safest and highest form remains the one taught directly by the Prophet ﷺ.
Love must follow guidance.
💎 Final Reflection
Sending ṣalāh upon Rasulullah ﷺ is:
Obedience to Allah
Expression of love
A means of mercy
A source of reward
A connection to his Sunnah
The Companions did not invent their own formula. They asked.
And we follow what he taught.
May Allah allow us to send abundant blessings upon His Messenger ﷺ and gather us with him in Jannah.
