🛑 Envy, the Evil Eye & Protecting Our Hearts
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
Introduction
Envy is a disease of the heart that can harm both the one who envies and the one being envied. Islam teaches us to recognize different types of envy, avoid harmful forms, and channel our feelings towards what pleases Allah ﷻ.
🔑 Types of Envy in Islam
1. Forbidden (Malicious) Envy
Wanting harm, loss, or destruction for someone else.
Leads to backbiting, gossip, and even sabotage.
This is sinful and destructive.
2. Permissible Envy
Seeing blessings in others and wishing the same for yourself, without wishing harm upon them.
Example: Admiring someone’s health, wealth, or success and praying:
“May Allah bless them, and grant me similar blessings.”
3. Praiseworthy Envy (Rewarded)
This is when you wish to have blessings of deen (faith) like others, in order to please Allah.
Rasulullah ﷺ said:
"Envy is not permitted except in two cases:
A man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it righteously,
and a man whom Allah has given wisdom (knowledge of the Qur’an) and he acts according to it and teaches it to others."
— Sahih al-Bukhari 73, Sahih Muslim 816
Other narrations mention a third: one who recites the Qur’an day and night.
⚠️ Signs of a Spiteful, Envious Heart
Not genuinely generous unless it benefits them.
Gossiping, backbiting, or making up stories.
Pretending to be a friend while secretly harming.
Excited when hearing misfortunes of others.
Constantly stalking or sabotaging others’ success.
Rasulullah ﷺ warned:
“None of you will truly believe until you love for your brother what you love for yourself.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari 13, Sahih Muslim 45
🌙 Inner Envy & Self-Doubt
Sometimes envy turns inward:
Feeling “I’ll never succeed”
Thinking Allah ﷻ has abandoned you
Giving up on your goals
Rasulullah ﷺ advised:
“Be diligent in what benefits you, seek help from Allah, and do not lose heart. If something befalls you, do not say, ‘If only I had done such-and-such,’ rather say, ‘QaddarAllahu wa maa shaa’a fa‘al (Allah has decreed and what He wills, He does).’”
— Sahih Muslim 2664
🛡️ Protection Against Evil Eye & Envy
Recite Surah Al-Falaq (113), Surah An-Naas (114), and Ayat al-Kursi (2:255) regularly.
Make the Prophetic du‘a for protection:
A‘oodhu bi kalimaat-illahi at-taammaati min sharri maa khalaq
(“I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.”)
— Sahih Muslim 2708
⚠️ Avoid superstitious practices (amulets, fortune tellers, talismans). True protection is with Allah alone.
🌸 Final Reminder
Envy begins in the heart. If we purify our intentions, pray for others, and trust in Allah’s decree, then envy will turn into motivation instead of destruction.
“And do not wish for that by which Allah has made some of you exceed others…”
