Wind and rain are among the great signs of Allah’s power. They can be a mercy, a blessing, or a warning. The Prophet ﷺ taught us specific duʿā to recite during these moments, guiding us to respond with faith, humility, and reliance upon Allah.

🌬️ 1. Duʿā When Strong Wind Blows

Narrated by ʿĀ’ishah (رضي الله عنها):

When the wind blew strongly, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would say:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهَا، وَخَيْرَ مَا فِيهَا، وَخَيْرَ مَا أُرْسِلَتْ بِهِ،
وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا، وَشَرِّ مَا فِيهَا، وَشَرِّ مَا أُرْسِلَتْ بِهِ

Transliteration

Allāhumma innī as’aluka khayrahā, wa khayra mā fīhā, wa khayra mā ursilat bih, wa aʿūdhu bika min sharrihā, wa sharri mā fīhā, wa sharri mā ursilat bih.

Authentic Translation

“O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, the goodness within it, and the goodness it was sent with. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil within it, and the evil it was sent with.”

Explanation

The Prophet ﷺ did not curse the wind. Instead, he recognized:

• Wind may bring mercy (rain, cooling air, growth).

• Wind may bring punishment (as happened to the people of ʿĀd — Qur’an 69:6).

• Natural events are under divine command.

• A believer turns to Allah in both fear and hope.

It is narrated that when rain fell, the Prophet ﷺ would say:

اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

Transliteration

Allāhumma ṣayyiban nāfiʿā.

“O Allah, make it beneficial rain.”

The Prophet ﷺ asked specifically for beneficial rain. Rain can:

• Nourish crops and revive the earth.

• Or cause floods and destruction.

After rainfall, the Prophet ﷺ would say:

مُطِرْنَا بِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَرَحْمَتِهِ

Transliteration

Muṭirnā bi faḍlillāhi wa raḥmatih.

“We have been given rain by the فضل (grace) and mercy of Allah.”

Explanation

This statement corrects belief. The rain is not due to:

• Nature alone

• Seasons alone

• Stars or luck

Rather, it is from the grace and mercy of Allah.

When rain became too heavy and harmful, the Prophet ﷺ said:

اللَّهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا وَلَا عَلَيْنَا
اللَّهُمَّ عَلَى الْآكَامِ وَالظِّرَابِ، وَبُطُونِ الْأَوْدِيَةِ، وَمَنَابِتِ الشَّجَرِ

Transliteration

Allāhumma ḥawālaynā wa lā ʿalaynā.
Allāhumma ʿalā al-ākām wa al-ẓirāb, wa buṭūn al-awdiyah, wa manābit al-shajar.

Authentic Translation

“O Allah, around us and not upon us.
O Allah, upon the hills, the mountains, the valleys, and the places where trees grow.”

Explanation

The Prophet ﷺ did not reject rain entirely. Instead, he asked for:

“Two supplications are not rejected: at the time of the call to prayer and during rainfall.”
