Do We Need to Recite Salawat Ibrahimiyyah in Tarawih?
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
When the Imam Finishes Tashahhud Quickly
Do We Need to Recite Salawat Ibrahimiyyah in Tarawih?
Many Muslims experience this situation during Tarāwīḥ or Qiyām al-Layl.
You are sitting in the final Tashahhud, and before you finish reciting the Salawat Ibrahimiyyah, the Imam
suddenly says:
“As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatullāh.”
This raises a common question:
Should we finish the Salawat?
Or should we immediately follow the Imam?
Let us understand this issue according to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
The Sunnah of the Final Tashahhud
In the final sitting of the prayer, the Prophet ﷺ taught the companions to recite the Tashahhud, followed by sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.
The Tashahhud
After this, the Prophet ﷺ taught the companions to recite the Salawat Ibrahimiyyah.
Salawat Ibrahimiyyah
Reference
Sahih al-Bukhari 6357
Sahih Muslim 406
This shows that sending Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ in the final Tashahhud is part of the Prophetic Sunnah.
Why Does This Issue Happen in Tarawih?
During Tarāwīḥ, the prayer usually consists of many rakʿahs (8, 20, or more).
To maintain the flow of the prayer, some Imams move quickly in the final Tashahhud, which makes it difficult for followers to complete the Salawat Ibrahimiyyah.
This leads many worshippers to wonder whether their prayer is incomplete.
What Did the Prophet ﷺ Teach About Following the Imam?
The Prophet ﷺ clearly instructed the believers to follow the Imam during congregational prayer.
He said:
“The Imam is appointed only to be followed.”
Reference
Sahih al-Bukhari 722
Sahih Muslim 412
This means that when the Imam ends the prayer, the congregation should follow him.
What Should You Do If the Imam Says Salam Quickly?
If the Imam gives Salam before you complete the Salawat Ibrahimiyyah:
✔ Immediately follow the Imam
✔ End your prayer with him
✔ Your prayer is still valid
Because following the Imam takes priority in congregational prayer.
The Best Practice During Tarawih
To follow the Sunnah as closely as possible:
1️⃣ Recite the Tashahhud
2️⃣ Try to recite the Salawat Ibrahimiyyah
3️⃣ If the Imam says Salam before you finish, follow him immediately
Your prayer remains valid, in shā’ Allāh.
A Beautiful Reminder
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Pray as you have seen me praying.”
Reference
Sahih al-Bukhari 631
So our goal is always to follow the Prophetic way of prayer, while also maintaining the unity of the congregation behind the Imam.
Final Reflection
Tarāwīḥ is a blessed time when Muslims gather in the mosque seeking the mercy of Allah.
Even if the Imam finishes quickly, remember that the purpose of the prayer is sincerity, humility, and following the Sunnah.
Do your best to follow the Sunnah, and trust that Allah rewards the intention of the heart.
✅ Key Takeaway
If the Imam finishes Tashahhud quickly during Tarāwīḥ:
Try to recite the Salawat Ibrahimiyyah
If he ends the prayer early → follow the Imam immediately
Your prayer is still valid.
