Do Not Defend the Guilty
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
وَلَا تُجَادِلْ عَنِ الَّذِينَ يَخْتَانُونَ أَنفُسَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ مَن كَانَ خَوَّانًا أَثِيمًا
“And do not argue on behalf of those who deceive themselves. Indeed, Allah does not love one who is habitually sinful and deceitful.”
📖 1. Historical Context (Asbāb al-Nuzūl)
This verse was revealed regarding an incident in Madinah involving a man from the Ansar who committed theft. When he was accused, some people tried to defend him and shift the blame onto an innocent Jewish man.
They came to the Prophet ﷺ asking him to argue in defense of the guilty Muslim. Before judgment was passed, Allah revealed these verses correcting the situation and protecting justice.
This shows something powerful:
Islam does not support wrongdoing — even if the wrongdoer is Muslim.
Justice must stand above tribal loyalty, friendship, or emotion.
🧠 2. Deeper Meaning of the Verse
“Do not argue on behalf of those who deceive themselves”
The word يَخْتَانُونَ أَنفُسَهُمْ (yakhtānūna anfusahum) means:
They betray themselves.
Why “themselves”?
Because every sin harms the sinner first. They may think they are cheating others — but in reality, they are destroying their own soul.
“Allah does not love one who is habitually sinful and deceitful”
Two strong words are used:
خَوَّانًا (Khawwān) – someone repeatedly treacherous
أَثِيمًا (Athīman) – deeply sinful
This is not a small mistake. It describes someone who makes deception a habit.
💡 3. Simple Understanding for Today
This verse teaches us:
❌ Do not defend wrongdoing just because the person is close to you.
⚖️ Justice must come before loyalty.
🧭 Sin harms the sinner more than anyone else.
🤲 Allah loves truthfulness and integrity.
In business, family, leadership, or community — never use your influence to protect injustice.
Even if it costs reputation. Even if it hurts relationships.
Allah sees everything.
🌍 Practical Reflection
In today’s world:
Lawyers may defend criminals knowing they are guilty.
Leaders may cover corruption.
Friends may lie to protect friends.
Families may hide crimes to “save face.”
This verse is a divine reminder:
👉 Never stand on the side of deception.
👉 Never use your words to justify wrongdoing.
👉 Protect truth — even if it is against your own people.
As Allah says elsewhere:
“O you who believe! Stand firmly for justice, even against yourselves or parents and relatives…”
(4:135)
❤️ A Powerful Lesson
This verse shows the beauty of Islamic justice:
Truth over tribe
Justice over loyalty
Accountability over emotion
Allah does not love betrayal — and the believer should never be a shield for injustice.

Allāhumma aj‘alnā min ahl al-‘adl waṣ-ṣidq,
wa lā taj‘alnā min al-khā’inīn.O Allah, make us among the people of justice and truth,
and do not make us among the deceitful.
