🌿 Loving the Prophet ﷺ the Sunnah Way
Tomorrow, many people will mark the day of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s birth. But the question is: how did he himself honor that day?
📖 The Prophet ﷺ said when asked about fasting Mondays:
“That is the day on which I was born and the day on which revelation came to me.”
(Sahih Muslim 1162)
✨ Neither the Prophet ﷺ, nor his Companions, nor the early generations ever held yearly birthday gatherings. Instead, they showed their love by:
Following his Sunnah in daily life.
Sending abundant salawat (peace & blessings).
Studying his seerah and character.
Fasting on Mondays.
Allah ﷻ says:
“Say: If you truly love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins.”
(Surah Āl ‘Imrān 3:31)

Did Prophet ﷺ or (Sahabah, Tabi‘in, and Tabi‘ al-Tabi‘in) celebrated ?
This is an important question, and many Muslims ask it every year. Let’s look at it step by step, based on the Qur’an, Sunnah, and the practice of the early generations (Sahabah, Tabi‘in, and Tabi‘ al-Tabi‘in).
🌿 1. Did the Prophet ﷺ Celebrate His Own Birthday?
The Prophet ﷺ never celebrated his birthday as a yearly festival.
What he did do: He fasted on Mondays, and when asked why, he said:
“That is the day on which I was born and the day on which revelation came to me.”
(Sahih Muslim 1162)
👉 So he marked his birth with worship (fasting), not with festivals, processions, or gatherings.
🌿 2. Did the Sahabah, Tabi‘in, or Tabi‘ al-Tabi‘in Celebrate?
No record exists of Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, ‘Uthman, ‘Ali (رضي الله عنهم), or any of the Sahabah celebrating the Prophet’s birthday.
Likewise, the Tabi‘in (their students) and the Tabi‘ al-Tabi‘in did not celebrate it.
These were the best generations, about whom the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best of people are my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 2652, Sahih Muslim 2533)
👉 If celebrating his birthday was good, surely the closest companions who loved him the most would have done it.
🌿 3. When Did “Mawlid” Start?
Historians mention that Mawlid was first introduced hundreds of years after the Prophet ﷺ, particularly by the Fatimid rulers in Egypt (4th century Hijri).
This means it was not from the original Sunnah, but a later innovation (bid‘ah).
🌿 4. Why Do Many Celebrate Today?
In some cultures (Asia, North Africa, etc.), Mawlid became a way to express love for the Prophet ﷺ, with gatherings, food, poetry, and reminders.
Governments (like in Malaysia) later made it a public holiday.
While the intention (love for the Prophet ﷺ) is noble, the method is not from his Sunnah.
🌿 5. What Should You Do?
🔹 Love the Prophet ﷺ in the way he taught us:
Follow his Sunnah daily.
Send abundant salawat (peace and blessings) upon him, especially on Fridays.
Learn his seerah and character.
Fast on Mondays (as he himself did).
🔹 Avoid innovations that the Prophet ﷺ, Sahabah, and early generations never practiced.
Allah ﷻ says:
“Say (O Muhammad): If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive your sins.”
(Surah Āl ‘Imrān 3:31)
The Prophet ﷺ warned:
“Whoever introduces into this affair of ours (Islam) that which is not from it, it will be rejected.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 2697, Sahih Muslim 1718)
✅ Conclusion
Mawlid (birthday celebration) was not practiced by the Prophet ﷺ, his companions, or the best early generations.
The correct Sunnah way to honor his birth is fasting on Mondays, learning his seerah, following his Sunnah, and sending salawat.
True love is shown not by innovation, but by obedience.
