The Beautiful Teaching of the Prophet ﷺ About Everyday Kindness

Many people think charity (ṣadaqah) only means giving money.
However, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that charity is much broader than wealth. Even small acts of kindness count as charity in Islam.

The Hadith

Arabic Text

عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ
تَبَسُّمُكَ فِي وَجْهِ أَخِيكَ لَكَ صَدَقَةٌ، وَأَمْرُكَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَنَهْيُكَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ صَدَقَةٌ، وَإِرْشَادُكَ الرَّجُلَ فِي أَرْضِ الضَّلَالِ لَكَ صَدَقَةٌ، وَبَصَرُكَ لِلرَّجُلِ الرَّدِيءِ الْبَصَرِ لَكَ صَدَقَةٌ، وَإِمَاطَتُكَ الْحَجَرَ وَالشَّوْكَةَ وَالْعَظْمَ عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ لَكَ صَدَقَةٌ، وَإِفْرَاغُكَ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي دَلْوِ أَخِيكَ لَكَ صَدَقَةٌ

Meaning

Abu Dharr (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Your smiling in the face of your brother is charity.
Enjoining good and forbidding evil is charity.
Showing a lost person the way is charity.
Helping someone with poor eyesight is charity.
Removing a stone, thorn, or bone from the road is charity.
Pouring water from your bucket into your brother’s bucket is charity.”

This Hadith teaches that everyday kindness is a form of ṣadaqah.

Three Simple Ways to Practice Charity Every Day

1. Listen With Kindness

The Prophet ﷺ showed kindness by giving people his full attention.

A woman once approached the Prophet ﷺ with a need.
He sat with her in the street and listened until she finished speaking.

This shows that giving someone your time and attention is also charity.

2. Think Well of Others

Islam encourages believers to avoid negative assumptions.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Avoid suspicion, for suspicion is the worst of false speech… Do not spy on one another, do not envy one another, and be servants of Allah as brothers.”

Giving others the benefit of the doubt is a charity of the heart.

3. Help Others With Your Skills

Sharing knowledge, experience, or skills without expecting reward is a noble act.

The Prophet ﷺ warned:

“A miser, one who reminds people of what he has given, and a deceitful person will not enter Paradise.”

True charity is helping others without reminding them of your favor.

A Powerful Principle in Islam

The Prophet ﷺ taught a universal rule:

“Every good deed is charity.”

Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6021, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1005

This means that smiling, helping, guiding, listening, and removing harm from others are all acts of charity.

Final Reflection

Islam teaches that charity is not limited to wealth.
Every Muslim can be charitable every day through:

• A smile

• A kind word

• Helping someone in need

• Removing harm from others

• Thinking well of people

Living with kindness and good character is a continuous form of ṣadaqah.
