A Du‘a the Prophet ﷺ Frequently Made in Prayer

Narrated by Aisha (RA):
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say in his prayers:
اللَّهُمَّ إني أعوذ بك من عذاب القبر، وأعوذ بك من فتنة المسيح الدجال، وأعوذ بك من فتنة المحيا وفتنة الممات. اللهم إني أعوذ بك من المأثم والمغرم
Transliteration:
Allāhumma innī a‘ūdhu bika min ‘adhābil-qabr, wa a‘ūdhu bika min fitnatil-Masīḥid-Dajjāl, wa a‘ūdhu bika min fitnatil-maḥyā wa fitnatil-mamāt. Allāhumma innī a‘ūdhu bika minal-ma’tham wal-maghram.
Meaning:
“O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave, from the trials of the false Messiah (Dajjal), from the trials of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from sin and from debt.”
Why Did the Prophet ﷺ Emphasize Debt?
When someone asked why he often sought refuge from debt, the Prophet ﷺ replied:
“A person in debt tells lies whenever he speaks and breaks promises whenever he makes them.”
This shows how debt can spiritually and morally harm a person if left unmanaged.
Key Lessons
Comprehensive Protection: This du‘a seeks refuge from the most dangerous trials: the grave, the Dajjal, life, death, sins, and debt.
Debt Is Serious: It is not only a financial issue but can lead to lying and breaking trust.
Sunnah Reminder: Include this du‘a in your daily prayers, especially before Taslim (ending salah).
