Supplications from the Qur’an and Authentic Sunnah

Seeking knowledge is one of the most honored acts in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ taught us that the path of knowledge leads to Paradise, and Allah Himself instructed the Prophet ﷺ to ask for more knowledge.

These authentic duʿās help a believer seek beneficial knowledge, wisdom, and protection from useless knowledge.

Below are eight powerful supplications from the Qur’an and authentic hadith.

1. Duʿā Asking Allah to Increase Knowledge

Arabic

رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا

Transliteration:

Rabbi zidnī ʿilmā

Meaning :

“My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”

Lesson:

This is the only thing Allah commanded the Prophet ﷺ to ask more of — knowledge.

2. Duʿā for Beneficial Knowledge

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

Transliteration:

Allahumma innī as’aluka ʿilman nāfiʿā wa rizqan ṭayyibā wa ʿamalan mutaqabbalā

Meaning:

“O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and accepted deeds.”

Practice:

The Prophet ﷺ used to recite this after Fajr prayer.

3. Duʿā Seeking Protection from Useless Knowledge

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ

Transliteration:

Allahumma innī aʿūdhu bika min ʿilmin lā yanfaʿ

Meaning:

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit.”

Lesson:

Not all knowledge benefits the heart. We should ask Allah for knowledge that brings us closer to Him.

4. Duʿā for Deep Understanding of the Religion

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْنِي فِي الدِّينِ

Transliteration:

Allahumma faqqihnī fid-dīn

Meaning:

“O Allah, grant me deep understanding of the religion.”

5. Duʿā for Knowledge and Wisdom

Arabic:

رَبِّ هَبْ لِي حُكْمًا وَأَلْحِقْنِي بِالصَّالِحِينَ

Transliteration:

Rabbi hab lī ḥukman wa alḥiqnī biṣ-ṣāliḥīn

Meaning:

“My Lord, grant me wisdom and join me with the righteous.”

6. Duʿā of Prophet Musa for Ease in Learning

Arabic:

رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي
وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي
وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي
يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي

Transliteration:

Rabbi ishraḥ lī ṣadrī
wa yassir lī amrī
waḥlul ʿuqdatan min lisānī
yafqahū qawlī

Meaning:

“My Lord, expand my chest, make my task easy for me, remove the knot from my tongue so people may understand my speech.”

7. Duʿā for Wisdom and Righteous Company

Arabic:

رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا وَارْزُقْنِي فَهْمًا

Transliteration:

Rabbi zidnī ʿilmā warzuqnī fahmā

Meaning:

“My Lord, increase me in knowledge and grant me understanding.”

(Common supplication used by scholars for seeking understanding.)

8. Duʿā for Knowledge that Brings Guidance

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ انْفَعْنِي بِمَا عَلَّمْتَنِي وَعَلِّمْنِي مَا يَنْفَعُنِي وَزِدْنِي عِلْمًا

Transliteration:

Allahumma infaʿnī bimā ʿallamtanī wa ʿallimnī mā yanfaʿunī wa zidnī ʿilmā

Meaning:

“O Allah, benefit me with what You have taught me, teach me what will benefit me, and increase me in knowledge.”

How to Practice These Duʿās

You can recite these supplications:

• After Fajr prayer
• Before studying or reading Qur’an
• Before attending Islamic classes
• When starting learning or teaching

Consistency in these duʿās brings barakah in knowledge.

Final Reminder

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever follows a path seeking knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise.”
