Unlock Allah's Love: Four Paths to Divine Affection

Discover the profound ways to earn the guaranteed love of Allah, as taught by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through the words of Muadh ibn Jabal. This article outlines four key actions that draw us closer to our Creator.

Imagine a love so profound, so encompassing, that it guarantees eternal bliss. This is the love of Allah (SWT), a treasure beyond measure. The path to this divine affection is illuminated for us through the teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). A beautiful narration from Abu Idris al-Khawlani (RA) recounts his encounter with the esteemed companion, Muadh ibn Jabal (RA), in a mosque in Damascus.

Abu Idris al-Khawlani was captivated by Muadh ibn Jabal, around whom many people gathered. Drawn by his radiant presence and beautiful smile, Abu Idris approached him the next day. Upon meeting him, Abu Idris declared, "I love you for the sake of Allah." Muadh (RA) sought reassurance, asking three times if this love was solely for Allah's sake. When confirmed, Muadh (RA) then shared a profound Hadith Qudsi:

Allah (SWT) said: "My love is guaranteed for the people who love one another for My sake, for the people who visit one another for My sake, for the people who sit with one another for My sake, and for the people who spend on one another for My sake."

This powerful Hadith, found in various collections including Imam Ahmad's Musnad, outlines four distinct pathways to earning Allah's guaranteed love. Let us delve into each of these.

1. Loving One Another for Allah's Sake

The first and foremost path is to love one another purely for the sake of Allah (SWT). This love transcends worldly ties, personal gain, or any material interest. It is a selfless affection rooted in faith and a shared desire for Allah's pleasure. The true essence of this love is wanting for your brother or sister what you want for yourself.

  • Wishing well for others: If your child graduates with distinction, you wish the same for their children. If your daughter memorizes the Quran, you hope for the same blessing for others' daughters. If you find a righteous spouse, you pray for others to find similar happiness.
  • Praying for others in their absence: A profound sign of loving someone for Allah's sake is making du'a for them without their knowledge. The angels respond to such prayers with "Ameen, and you shall have the same." This selfless act not only benefits the one prayed for but also brings blessings upon the one who prays.

This pure love fosters a community bound by faith, where individuals genuinely care for each other's well-being in this life and the Hereafter.

2. Sitting Together for Allah's Sake

The second category includes those who gather and sit together solely for Allah's sake. This refers to attending circles of knowledge, lectures, study groups, or any assembly where the primary purpose is to learn about Islam, reflect on the Quran, study Hadith, or perfect one's recitation.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

"No group of people gather in one of the Houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it among themselves, except that tranquility descends upon them, mercy covers them, angels surround them, and Allah mentions them among those with Him." (Sahih Muslim)

These gatherings are not for idle chatter or worldly discussions, but for spiritual growth and drawing closer to Allah. Surrounding ourselves with righteous company in such circles not only earns divine love but also provides support and encouragement on our spiritual journey. On the Day of Judgment, our righteous companions will intercede for us, a powerful testament to the bonds formed for Allah's sake.

3. Visiting One Another for Allah's Sake

The third path to Allah's guaranteed love is visiting one another purely for His sake. This is an act of 'ibadah (worship) that is sometimes overlooked. Such visits are not for business, personal favors, or any worldly agenda, but simply to strengthen bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood in Islam.

A beautiful Hadith illustrates this:

"A man set out to visit a brother in another town. Allah sent an angel to lie in wait for him on his way. When the man came by, the angel asked, 'Where are you going?' He replied, 'I am going to visit a brother of mine in this town.' The angel asked, 'Do you have any blessing to gain from him?' He replied, 'No, other than that I love him for the sake of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious.' The angel said, 'I am a messenger of Allah to you to inform you that Allah loves you as you love him for His sake.'" (Sahih Muslim)

When undertaking such visits, it is important to adhere to the Sunnah, ensuring the visit is not overly long, respecting the host, and perhaps bringing a small gift to foster love and goodwill.

4. Spending on One Another for Allah's Sake

Finally, Allah's love is guaranteed for those who spend on one another for His sake. This encompasses acts of charity, financial assistance, and helping those in need, all done with the sole intention of pleasing Allah.

  • Discreet and respectful giving: If you learn that a brother or sister has lost their job, is ill, or is in debt, take the initiative to help them discreetly and respectfully, without them having to ask. It is often difficult for a person to ask for financial aid.
  • Paying off debts: Assisting someone in paying off their debts is a highly virtuous act that earns immense rewards and Allah's love.

The image of Ustadh Mohamad Baajour, a man with a gentle beard and a serene expression, speaking about these profound topics, reminds us of the wisdom and guidance available to us. His words, delivered from a setting that appears to be a study or personal reflection space, resonate with the importance of seeking knowledge and applying it in our lives.

These four actions—loving, gathering, visiting, and spending—all for the sake of Allah, are not merely good deeds; they are direct pathways to earning the guaranteed love of our Creator. May Allah (SWT) make us among those whose love is guaranteed for them, and gather us with this love under His shade on the Day when there will be no shade but His.
