The Blessings of Friday: Sunnah Acts, Hidden Treasures, and Enormous Rewards

4 min read• 0 views

Discover the spiritual excellence of Jumu'ah, essential Sunnah acts like Ghusl and Surah Al-Kahf, and the tremendous reward awaiting those who arrive early.

Every week, Muslims are granted a divine opportunity for spiritual elevation, renewal, and forgiveness. Friday—known as Yawm al-Jumu'ah—is not merely another weekday on the calendar; it is the weekly celebration (Eid) of the believers and the master of all days.

The Station of Friday in Islam

Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala singles out this day with profound significance. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) highlighted its cosmic and spiritual station, as narrated in Sahih Muslim:

"The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he was admitted to Paradise, and on it he was expelled from it. And the Hour will not be established except on Friday." (Sahih Muslim, 854)

Recognizing the honor of this day inspires us to approach it with intention, gratitude, and preparation rather than routine lethargy.

The Tremendous Reward of Walking Early to the Mosque

One of the most remarkable Hadiths concerning Jumu'ah reveals an immense bounty for modest physical effort. Aws ibn Aws ath-Thaqafi reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

"Whoever performs Ghusl on Friday and bathes completely, then goes early to the prayer, walking and not riding, and sits close to the Imam, listens attentively, and does not engage in idle talk—for every step he takes, he will have the reward of one year of fasting and standing in night prayer." (Sunan Abi Dawud, 345; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, 496; graded Sahih by al-Albani)

Consider the scale of this mercy: walking just one hundred steps toward the house of Allah under these conditions yields the spiritual equivalent of one hundred years of continuous voluntary fasting and night prayer (Tahajjud). This is a masterclass in divine generosity for sincere worshippers of all ages.

Essential Sunnahs to Revive on Friday

To fully harvest the blessings of Jumu'ah, the Sunnah provides a practical roadmap of grooming, mindfulness, and worship:

  • Purification (Ghusl) and Oral Care (Siwak): Taking a complete bath purifies the body and refreshes the spirit before meeting fellow worshippers. Using the miswak or cleaning the teeth preserves personal hygiene.
  • Wearing One's Best Clothes: Dress respectfully in clean, pleasant garments designated for gatherings of worship.
  • Applying Perfume (for Men): Using pleasant non-alcoholic fragrance or attar contributes to an uplifting atmosphere in congregation.
  • Going to the Masjid Early: Arriving ahead of the Khutbah allows one to pray Tahiyyat al-Masjid, recite Quran, and sit near the Minbar without stepping over others.
  • Walking on Foot: If physical ability and distance permit, walking to the prayer maximizes spiritual steps of reward.
  • Attentive Silence during the Khutbah: Total focus is mandatory. Speaking, texting, or even gesturing while the Imam speaks deprives one of the complete Jumu'ah reward.

Illumination Through Surah Al-Kahf

Reciting Surah Al-Kahf during Friday brings protection and guidance in an era full of spiritual trials. Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

"Whoever reads Surah al-Kahf on the day of Friday, a light will shine for him between this Friday and the next." (Sunan al-Kubra by al-Bayhaqi; Mustadrak al-Hakim; graded Sahih by al-Albani in Sahih al-Jami', 6470)

This light acts as moral discernment (baseerah), guarding the heart against false worldly attractions and shielding the believer from spiritual pitfalls.

The Precious Hour of Supplication (Sa'at al-Istijabah)

Within Friday lies a fleeting, sacred window where heartfelt prayers are answered without rejection. Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned Friday and stated:

"There is an hour on Friday during which no Muslim servant stands in prayer asking Allah for something good, except that He gives it to him." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 935; Sahih Muslim, 852)

Many scholars, drawing upon authentic narrations, indicate that this period is most likely the final hour before sunset (Maghrib). Dedicate the closing moments of Friday afternoon to earnest Du'a for yourself, your family, and the global Ummah.

Practical Steps to Maximize Every Jumu'ah

  1. Prepare on Thursday Night: Lay out clean clothing, charge your devices, and plan your Friday schedule around the congregation.
  2. Wake Early: Recite Surah Al-Kahf in the morning hours so your mind is calm and unhurried.
  3. Send Abundant Blessings (Salawat): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed: "Increase your supplications for me on Friday and the night before Friday." (al-Bayhaqi, Sunan al-Kubra).
  4. Disconnect from Distractions: Switch off mobile notifications before stepping through the doors of the Masjid.

Let this Friday be a turning point. Transform your routine attendance into an intentional act of devotion, and capture the immense treasures laid out by Allah's infinite grace.
