Qur'an Reflection
From Dust to Life—and Back Again: Allah’s Signs of Resurrection | Surah Al-Hajj 22:5
Surah Al-Hajj 22:5 invites us to reflect on our own creation and the revival of dead earth after rain. Both are powerful signs pointing to Allah’s ability to give life again after death.
From Dust to Life—and Back Again: Allah’s Signs of Resurrection
Sometimes the idea of resurrection can feel difficult for the human mind to imagine.
In Surah Al-Hajj, verse 5, Allah answers this doubt by asking us to look at something very close to us: our own existence.
How did we begin?
How did a tiny beginning become a fully developed human being?
And how does apparently lifeless earth become green again after rain?
Allah directs our attention to these signs so that we may understand that the One who created life the first time is fully able to bring it back again.
The Qur'an Verse
Surah Al-Hajj (22:5)

Translation
“O People, if you should be in doubt about the Resurrection, then [consider that] indeed, We created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot, and then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed—that We may show you.
And We settle in the wombs whom We will for a specified term, then We bring you out as a child, and then [We develop you] that you may reach your [time of] maturity.
And among you is he who is taken in [early] death, and among you is he who is returned to the most decrepit [old] age so that he knows, after [once having] knowledge, nothing.
And you see the earth barren, but when We send down upon it rain, it quivers and swells and grows [something] of every beautiful kind.”
— Al-Qur'an, Surah Al-Hajj 22:5
What Is Allah Teaching Us?
The central subject of this verse is resurrection after death.
Allah does not simply command people to believe without reflection. He directs human beings to observe signs already happening around—and within—them.
1. Look at where you came from
Human beings may become powerful, wealthy, knowledgeable or influential.
Yet our physical beginning was extremely small.
The verse takes us through stages of human creation:
Dust → sperm-drop → clinging substance → developing flesh → womb → child → maturity → old age → death
Our existence itself is therefore a sign.
We did not create ourselves.
2. Your whole life is a journey
Allah reminds us that human strength does not remain forever.
A person begins as a helpless child, develops strength and maturity, and eventually faces death. Some die earlier, while others live until advanced old age.
This should teach us humility.
Our strength, intelligence, possessions and abilities are temporary gifts.
3. Look at the earth after rain
Allah then gives us another sign that everyone can observe.
The land can appear dry, barren and lifeless.
Then rain falls.
Suddenly it moves, swells and produces beautiful plants.
What appeared dead becomes alive.
This visible transformation points us toward the reality of resurrection.
If Allah brings apparently dead earth back to life, bringing human beings back after death is not beyond His power.
The Connection to Resurrection
The next verse makes the lesson especially clear:
“That is because Allah is the Truth and because He gives life to the dead and because He is over all things competent.”
— Surah Al-Hajj 22:6
Therefore, Surah Al-Hajj 22:5 is not merely describing human development.
Its larger message is:
The Creator who gave you life the first time can give you life again.
Practical Lessons for Your Life
Sign mentioned in the verse | What it can teach us |
|---|---|
Our creation | Remember our dependence upon Allah |
Development in the womb | Reflect on Allah’s power and wisdom |
Childhood | Remember our humble beginning |
Maturity | Use our strength and abilities responsibly |
Old age | Understand that worldly strength is temporary |
Death | Remember that worldly life has an end |
Rain reviving dead land | Recognise a visible sign pointing toward resurrection |
A Personal Reflection
Think about your own life.
There was a time when you were not walking, speaking, planning, earning or making decisions.
Allah brought you through stages until you became the person you are today.
One day, this worldly journey will also end.
But death is not presented in the Qur'an as the end of our existence.
There will be resurrection.
There will be a return to Allah.
So instead of allowing this reminder merely to frighten us, it should awaken us:
How am I using the life Allah has given me?
What am I preparing for the life that comes after it?
Conclusion
Surah Al-Hajj 22:5 asks the person who doubts resurrection to look carefully at life itself.
Look at your beginning.
Look at the stages through which you developed.
Look at ageing.
Look at death.
Then look at barren earth becoming alive after rain.
These are not presented as meaningless events. They are signs inviting us to recognise the power of our Creator.
The One who created us the first time is able to resurrect us.
And perhaps the most important question is not simply:
“Will there be another life?”
But:
“What am I preparing today for my return to Allah?”
