A Day or Part of a Day: Understanding Our Temporary Life on Earth

3 min read• 0 views

Discover what the Qur'an reveals in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:112-115) about how fleeting our earthly stay is and why our lives hold profound purpose.

In the rush of our daily routines, it is easy to view this world as our permanent home. We plan decades ahead, gather possessions, and worry deeply about tomorrow. Yet, the Holy Qur'an presents an entirely different, humbling perspective: human life on earth is merely a brief transit—a fleeting pause in our eternal journey.

The Powerful Dialogue in Surah Al-Mu'minun

Towards the conclusion of Surah Al-Mu'minun, Allah conveys a sobering conversation that will occur on the Day of Judgment between the Creator and humanity regarding the true span of earthly life.

Verses 112 to 115

قَالَ كَمْ لَبِثْتُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ عَدَدَ سِنِينَ
Qaala kam labistum fil ardi 'adada sineen
[Allah] will say, "How long did you remain on earth in number of years?" (23:112)

قَالُوا لَبِثْنَا يَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍ فَاسْأَلِ الْعَادِّينَ
Qaaloo labisnaa yawman aw ba'da yawmin fas'alil 'aaddeen
They will say, "We remained a day or part of a day; ask those who enumerate." (23:113)

قَالَ إِن لَّبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ۖ لَّوْ أَنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
Qaala il labistum illaa qaleelal law annakum kuntum ta'lamoon
He will say, "You stayed not but a little—if only you had known." (23:114)

أَفَحَسِبْتُمْ أَنَّمَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ عَبَثًا وَأَنَّكُمْ إِلَيْنَا لَا تُرْجَعُونَ
Afahasibtum annamaa khalaqnaakum 'abasanw wa annakum ilainaa laa turja'oon
"Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?" (23:115)

Context and Meaning: The Illusion of Time

When standing before Allah on the Day of Resurrection, all the decades lived on earth—whether sixty, seventy, or a hundred years—will suddenly shrink in human perception. Stripped of earthly distractions, people will reply that their entire worldly existence felt like nothing more than "a day or part of a day."

Allah affirms this reality: our stay truly was brief. The illusion that earthly life is vast and enduring deceives people into neglecting their eternal destination. In verse 115, Allah directly addresses this human heedlessness by asking whether we assumed our creation was without intention or wisdom, as if we would never be held accountable.

This Qur'anic reality mirrors the timeless advice taught by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). In a renowned hadith narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet said:

"Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler along a path."
— Sahih al-Bukhari (Hadith 6416)

A traveler in transit does not spend their energy furnishing the waiting terminal; they gather what is necessary for the journey and remain focused on their true destination.

Key Lessons from the Verses

Key Lessons from the Verses

Time is Relative: Compared to eternity (Akhirah), our entire life on earth is shorter than a single breath.

Purpos

  • Time is Relative: Compared to eternity (Akhirah), our entire life on earth is shorter than a single breath.

  • Purposeful Creation: We were not created haphazardly ('abathan). Every breath, heartbeat, and moment serves an intentional purpose—worship and obedience to Allah.

  • Inevitable Return: Every single soul will return to its Creator to account for how this brief transit was spent.

  • Gratitude and Perspective: Earthly hardships and trials are temporary. Knowing how short life is brings comfort during pain and restraint during comfort.

Practical Daily Applications

  1. Prioritize What Lasts: Invest daily in deeds that survive past the grave—sincere prayers, continuous charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), and beneficial knowledge.

  2. Lighten Worldly Attachment: Enjoy lawful blessings with gratitude, but avoid letting possessions, status, or wealth anchor your heart.

  3. Daily Self-Accounting (Muhasabah): Before sleeping, reflect on your day. Did your actions build your eternal home, or were they lost in fleeting distractions?

  4. Treasure Your Hours: Treat time as your most finite resource. Avoid procrastination when turning to Allah in sincere repentance (Tawbah).

Personal Reflection and Conclusion

Reflecting on these verses instills both awe and hope. Realizing that this life is only a day or part of a day relieves the overwhelming weight of worldly grief and awakens us from spiritual slumber. We are visitors in transit, traveling toward eternal peace in the presence of our Lord. Let us use this brief stay wisely, ensuring that our return to Allah is met with joy, mercy, and forgiveness.
